U.S. Space Force's Hyperspace Challenge, an innovation accelerator, has declared the commencement of its 2023 program. This endeavor, in collaboration with the Space Rapid Capabilities Office (Space RCO) of the U.S. Space Force, aims to bring together a pool of seasoned researchers and established firms. The objective of the 2023 cohort is to brainstorm novel strategies to enhance the resilience of space assets, primarily satellites, against potential threats.

This call to action is open to not only entities within the conventional domains of space, aerospace, and defense, but also to companies within tangential industries like manufacturing, automotive, and cybersecurity. Interested parties are encouraged to register their intent by August 15th.

Matthew Fetrow, Space RCO's Communications Manager, highlighted the urgency of this mission. "The progression we're witnessing in the space arena is triggering a ground-breaking transformation, carrying the promise of profound socio-economic impact," he stated. "Yet, the critical assets facilitating this progress are under escalating threat. We must devise effective, rapid measures to shield them from mounting risks."

In the wake of increasing concerns over the security of satellites - military, civil, and commercial - from deliberate hostile actions such as signal jamming, physical attacks, and laser attacks, the necessity for space to be a safe domain for all stakeholders becomes apparent. Advancements need to be made to bolster the security, sustainability, and stability of space for the long term.

Fetrow continued, "To confront this challenge, we need to engage with companies and researchers outside of the traditional space industry who are capable of leveraging existing technologies for broader application within the space sector." He emphasized that this is not just a call to companies already operating in the space industry but also an invitation to those in other sectors whose advanced technologies could be pivoted towards space. "The future of space is inclusive, and that future is now," Fetrow added.

The 2023 cohort's central objective is to investigate how their respective technologies can bolster the resilience of space assets while augmenting their responsiveness to threats. The Space RCO is actively seeking products that enhance space visibility, awareness, autonomy, and vehicle longevity and maneuverability. While individual needs may be met by different companies, Space RCO strongly encourages a collaborative approach to unlock unprecedented opportunities in space.

Program participants will have the opportunity to liaise directly with government officials from Space RCO, creating valuable networks and fostering relationships.

Ideal applicants for this program are companies with technology that could expedite the design, development, and deployment of relevant solutions within a few years. This includes firms in the traditional space or aerospace industries, companies outside of these industries that have applicable technological solutions, and those interested in understanding governmental needs and forming relationships with potential government partners.

The application process will be launched after a series of informative webinars in August. Companies eager to learn more are advised to express their interest here for further updates.
