Security Council tightens UN sanctions on Iran

The Security Council voted overwhelmingly Monday to tighten UN sanctions on Iran over its refusal to suspend its sensitive nuclear fuel work which the West fears is aimed at developing nuclear weapons.

A resolution sponsored by Britain, France and Germany gained the backing of 14 of the council's 15 members. Indonesia abstained.

Feb. 11 marked the 29th anniversary of the founding of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Yet, as nations across the world have made huge technological and scientific advancements over the past three decades, Tehran's rulers have taken the people of ancient Persia back to the closest thing to the Middle Ages. (Lord Corbett of Castle Vale, a member of the House of Lords from Gordon Brown's ruling Labor Party, is chairman of the British Parliamentary Committee for Iran Freedom.)
