Singapore (AFP) Oct 22, 2007 Singapore will buy 12 more US-made Boeing F-15 fighter jets, the defence ministry said Monday, bulking up one of Asia's most modern armed forces. Eight of the new jets will be purchased under an option to a contract signed in December 2005, the Ministry of Defence said in a statement. That contract was for 12 jets with the option to buy eight more. Singapore has also ordered another four of the jets. "This acquisition of 12 more F-15SGs is part of the RSAF's (Republic of Singapore Air Force) continuing effort to renew its fighter fleet," the statement said. "The additional F-15SGs, which will be equipped with sophisticated avionics and weapon systems, will be delivered from 2010." Industry analysts said the initial deal was worth about one billion US dollars, but no figures were provided for the purchase of the additional jets. The first F15s were to arrive in 2008 and 2009 to replace a squadron of ageing A-4SU Super Skyhawks, upgrades of US-made aircraft first bought in the 1970s. The city-state increased its defence budget by 5.3 percent this year to an estimated 10.58 billion dollars (7.23 billion US).
