UK's NSTF Selects ARS for Groundbreaking Acoustic Testing Project
by Sophie Jenkins
London, UK (SPX) Dec 01, 2023

Acoustic Research Systems (ARS), a leader in Direct Field Acoustic Testing (DFAT) solutions, has been awarded a contract to provide a full-scale, state-of-the-art DFAT turnkey solution to the UK's National Satellite Test Facility (NSTF). This landmark contract not only underlines ARS' position as a frontrunner in the DFAT domain but also marks a pivotal moment in the company's expansion, especially with its first international subsidiary, Acoustic Research Systems (Europe) GmbH, having been established less than a year ago.

The NSTF, strategically located at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) site in Oxfordshire and operated by RAL Space, is a central player in the realm of space exploration. It requires sophisticated acoustic testing systems to evaluate spacecraft and their sub-assemblies, which can weigh up to 7000kg.

These evaluations are crucial to ensure that the spacecraft meet the stringent conditions necessary for successful launches. The ARS acoustic testing system is designed to subject aerospace components to the environmental stress levels produced by various launch systems, thereby aiding in confirming their readiness for real launch conditions and successful deployment.

RAL's decision to partner with ARS was influenced by ARS' ability to provide a comprehensive, flexible system configuration. This system can not only accommodate current needs but is also scalable to meet future requirements, with the potential for control upgrades to incorporate more flight representative test methods. The selection of ARS for this cutting-edge technology further cements the company's reputation for excellence and innovation in the field of direct field acoustic testing solutions.

Tobias Wulf, ARS Director Europe, expressed his enthusiasm about the partnership: "We are honored to be selected as a strategic partner by RAL and to be delivering the first full-scale Direct Field Acoustic Testing system on UK soil. The innovation focus and investment made by RAL will clearly increase the relevance and acceptance of Direct Field Acoustic Testing methods in Europe, and ARS is prepared to serve the market with the service quality and speed we have built our reputation on."
