UN Security Council to discuss Iran missile test
by Staff Writers
United Nations, United States (AFP) Oct 21, 2015

The UN Security Council on Wednesday will discuss Iran's recent missile test, at the request of the United States which maintains it violated UN resolutions, diplomats said.

US Ambassador Samantha Power last week said Washington had concluded that a medium-range ballistic missile launched on October 10 was capable of delivering a nuclear weapon and was a "clear violation" of UN resolutions.

Power said the United States would present a report to the sanctions committee and press for "an appropriate response."

Diplomats said the issue could be taken up by the sanctions committee which would make a determination as to whether the launch violates resolution 1929, adopted in 2010.

Resolution 1929 prohibits Tehran from conducting ballistic missiles tests.

It remained unclear whether sanctions would be considered, following the historic nuclear deal reached with world powers that has opened up a new chapter of relations with Tehran.

Iran on Saturday denied that the missile launch was in volation of UN resolutions, with Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif saying that it was not designed to carry nuclear warheads.

The nuclear deal reached with Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia and the United States aims to limit Iran's nuclear program in return for lifting international sanctions.

Iran insists it has no plans to develop atomic weapons.
