US military to send 850 troops to train Afghan forces

Canadian soldier killed in Afghanistan
Ottawa (AFP) May 4, 2010 - A Canadian soldier has been killed in a roadside blast during a walking patrol some 25 kilometres (15 miles) southwest of Kandahar City, the military said Tuesday. The improvised explosive device was detonated in the Panjwayi District, at about 4:40 pm Kandahar time on May 3. Petty Officer Second Class Craig Blake was reportedly returning to base after deactivating another bomb. He is the 143rd Canadian soldier to be killed in the war-torn nation since 2002. Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Defense Minister Peter MacKay and Governor General Michaelle Jean offered condolences to his family. Canada has 2,830 troops in Afghanistan, fighting insurgents in the volatile Kandahar province as part of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF).

The US military has ordered 850 troops to Afghanistan to fill a shortage of trainers for security forces, as European allies needed more time to deploy their instructors, the Pentagon said Tuesday.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates approved the deployment of about 150 Marines and an Army battalion for a 90 to 120-day assignment, officials said.

"It is designed as a bridging force to try buy the allies a little bit more time to get the remainder of their trainers in place," press secretary Geoff Morrell told AFP.

The move would ensure that training efforts for Afghan army and police would not be disrupted or slowed down as European states work to meet their pledges to supply trainers, he said.

"This is not a long-term answer to the persistent problem of a shortage of trainers. This is a stopgap, temporary solution," he said.

US and European officials see the training and equipping of Afhgan security forces as crucial to an eventual withdrawal of NATO-led forces.
